Lucanidae Latreille, 1804
General description:
elongate robust body, up to 120mm in size. tarsi 5-5-5. mandibles of males are often very large, sometimes even branched; females generally smaller body size and smaller mandibles. Antennae very distinctive: elbowed, 10-segmented, with a comb-like 3- or 4-segmented club; club segments can not be folded togerther. elytra covers whole abdomen and is not striate.
Biology:
Adults are thought to feed on tree sap and live mostly in wooded areas where they lie the eggs in the cracks of bark. Larvae bore in decaying or dead wood. Adult males use their big jaws to fight with other males over females, or food.
